Journalists Storm Eldoret Police Station to Demand Sacking of Police Officer Who Harassed K24 Cameraman

Journalists at Eldoret Police Station where they demanded immediate sacking of deputy OCS Pius Misikhu for harassment and damaging media equipment belonging to Duncan Wanga, a K24 Tv cameraman

Journalists in Eldoret Town today stormed the Eldoret police station demanding for justice for one of them who was yesterday harassed by a police officer. Duncan Wanga, K24 cameraman was covering the pro-Mandago demos in the streets of Eldoret when the Deputy OCS Eldoret West, Pius Misikhu, ordered him to stop filming the demo. Misikhu roughed him up breaking his camera.

The journalists held a procession from the Eldoret High Courts, along the Uganda Road and ended at the Eldoret Police station where they presented their petition to the OCS Eldoret West.

Wanga also recorded a statement.

Eldoret West OCS assured the journalists that their grievances have been heard and investigations into the incident will begin soon.

Journalists demanded immediate sacking of the rogue police officer. They pointed out that they now fear for their safety with the increasing incidences of harassment and especially from the law enforcers. They also demanded compensation of the affected journalist and replacement of the broken video camera.

They were joined by human rights activists who termed the yesterday’s incident as unfortunate and urged the Independent Police Oversight Authority, Inspector General of Police and the National Police Service to take the matter with urgency it deserves.
