The leadership wrangles at Moi University seem to be taking to another level following the appointment of Prof. Laban Ayiro as the acting vice chancellor. This comes few days after the interviews for the position were carried out. Prof. Ayiro has been acting as the deputy vice chancellor in charge of planning. He is also the university’s Quality assurance Officer.
Appointment of Prof Ayiro comes just a day after the term of prof. Richard Mibey ended.
“Prof Ayiro will act for a period of three months until a substantive VC is appointed,” Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said in a letter to the University Council chairman Prof. Jenasio Kinyamario.
The varsity’s staff and local leaders have raised concern over the delay by the ministry to appoint the new VC. Moi University Council has already submitted three names to the CS to be appointed for the position. They include Prof. Kosgei, Prof Daniel Tarus and Prof. Isaac Kimengi.
On the other hand the staff are up in arms over the impending retrenchment and alleged management crisis and misappropriation of funds at the university. They vowed to boycott the 32nd graduation ceremony on Thursday and Friday this week.
