Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties politicians led by Governor Jackson Mandago today stormed Moi University to demand immediate appointment of the new vice chancellor following retirement of Prof. Richard Mibey.
The leaders included; Governors Jackson Mandago(Uasin Gishu), Alex Tolgos(Elgeyo Marakwet), Uasin Gishu County Assembly Speaker Isaac Terer, MPs James Bett(Kesses), Silas Tiren(Moiben) and Oscar Sudi(Kapseret).
Gov. Mandago said they want the extension of Prof. Mibey’s term by a week to give room for Education CS Dr Fred Matiang’i to formally appoint a new Vice Chancellor at the institution.
He warned that failure to heed their demands they will join the community and the Moi University staff in a strike that will paralyze a graduation ceremony scheduled for Thursday and Friday.
The leaders sought audience with the university council and the acting vice chancellor Prof. Laban Ayiro whose appointment they disputed as a scheme to deny the right candidate appointment into the office.
They demanded immediate appointment of Prof. Isaac Kosgey as the new vice chancellor as he topped in the interviews for the position.
“They want to give Ayiro to act for two weeks in order to re-advertise the position which is totally Unacceptable. We are demanding that Kosgey who led in the interviews be given the job,”said Gov. Tolgos.
Yesterday, Education Cabinet Secretary appointed Prof. Ayiro as the acting vice-chancellor to replace Prof Richard Mibey whose term ended on yesterday (Monday, September 19).
