County Assembly of Uasin Gishu has passed a motion urging the County Government of Uasin Gishu through the department of Health Services to create, establish and manage healthcare unit centers in all sub county hospitals to cater for gender based violence. While moving the motion on Thursday 7 July 2016, Hon. David Tarus MCA Kapkures Ward observed that gender based violence issues have not been given the desired attention by the concerned authorities in the county and thus many victims continue to suffer in silence.
He added that most of these victims have suffered immense emotional and physical pain that has ruined their lives and that of their families. He decried that most of these victims do not get timely and professional support because there is only one gender based violence unit in the county based at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret Town which is serving even the neighboring counties.
The motion was seconded by Hon. Rabecca Sugut MCA Kuinet/Kapsuswa who hailed the motion as timely. She said that most of the victims and their families are not able to access medical attention due to the long distance to Eldoret Town and financial constraints. She added that the health sector was a devolved function therefore the services should be brought near the citizens in far flung villages and also sensitize the community on the rights of victims of gender violence.
While contributing to the motion, Hon. Isaac Chirchir MCA Soy Ward said that the constitution guarantees all citizens of Kenya freedom from any form of violence. He added that these centers when established in sub county hospitals will go a long way in upholding human dignity of gender based violence victims. He emphasized that through these centers the victims will receive not only treatment but also counseling and assist them in seeking justice.
