Moi University yesterday began a two day exercise of head count of its employees in order weed out ghost workers. The institution which is grappling with leadership wrangles has been making headlines when the retiring Vice chancellor Prof. Richard Mibey was reinstated after being given a three month terminal leave.
This follows dismissal of some senior management officers on claims of misuse of office and misappropriation of funds. Workers’ unions representing the teaching and support staff have been up in arms against the university management. They said that the university has not been remitting their pension, Sacco dues and not paying the lecturers who teach privately sponsored students.
Speaking to Eldoret Newsline on phone, Kirui, a casual employee in the Estates and Maintenance Department said that there has been a rise in number of employees mos of whom are earning salaries and using the varsities facilities and yet they do not report to work. He revealed also that there are many other casual employees have remained to be casual for over five years.
