On Thursday 30th June 2016 all eyes will be glued to the new-look Eldoret’s Kipchoge Keino Stadium, as it hosts the eagerly anticipated Athletics National Olympic trials. Kenya’s world-beating stars will compete with upcoming athletes in track and field events to secure their place in the Rio 2016 Olympics squad.
At the action-packed stadium, politicians and sports officials, as well as the corporate world dignitaries, will take their place at the VIP stand. It will be a day to behold too for the thousands of fans in the stands. On the track, a hum of loud scream from the field events arena will suddenly rent the air as the crowds break into wild cheers.
Uasin Gishu Governor, Jackson Mandago has said that there will be no charges at the stadium entry points for athletic enthusiasts to watch the action live from the region dubbed ‘Home of Champions’. People from all walks of life are expected to attend the Thursday event.
The Chairman of the Local organising Committee, Abraham Mutai has exuded confidence that all is set for the big day. However he maintained that the expansive warm up area adjacent to the stadium was at its final touches. Due to the heavy rains in the region, Mutai said they will erect tents in sections of the terraces with no roofing.
It is the first time an event of such a calibre is being held in Eldoret as organisers argue that it will be a beehive of activities on the D-Day as family, friends and athletics enthusiasts turn up to support their champions in a do-or-die encounter.
